WHAT ARE COOKIES?
Cookies are small text files that are send by the sites visited by the user which are send to its terminal (usually a browser),where are memorized and retransmitted at the same sites during the next visit of the same user.
Over the navigation on a site, the user can even receive on it’s terminal cookies that are sent by different sites or web server (c.d third parts), on which can reside some elements such as, for example, images, maps, sounds, specific links to pages of other domains) on the site that the same is visiting.
Cookies, usually present in the browsers of users in a very high number and sometimes even with features of large temporal persistence, are used for different purposes: execution of computer authentication, session monitoring, storing information about specific configurations regarding users accessing the server, in general to improve the browsing experience.
Depending on the function and purpose of use, cookies can be divided into four categories, technical cookies: session, analytical, functionality and profiling cookies.
The session technical cookies
They allow you to move around a website and use its functions. In the absence of these cookies, the requested services cannot be provided. An example of this is the storage of actions (e.g. text entered) to return to the previous pages within the same session.
The analytical technical cookies
They collect information on the use of a website by visitors, for example the most visited pages and the possible display of error messages of the site. These cookies do not collect information that can lead to profiling of visitors. All the information obtained is aggregated (therefore anonymous) and used only to improve the operation of the site.
Technical cookies for functionality
They allow the site to remember the choices of the user (such as his name, his language and the geographical region in which he is located) and to provide advanced and more personalized features. For example, a website may be able to provide tax information locally using a cookie to store the province in which the user is located at that time.
Functionality cookies can also be used to provide certain services requested by the user, such as playing a video. The information collected by these cookies can be anonymized and do not keep track of the user’s browsing activities on other websites.
They are used to provide more targeted advertising content to the user and his interests.
They also allow to limit the number of appearances of an advertisement and to determine at the same time the effectiveness of an advertising campaign.
They remember whether a user has visited a website or not, sharing this information with other organizations (e.g. advertisers).
Targeting or advertising cookies are often linked to website functions provided by other organisations.
These, allowing the site to remember the user’s data for the duration of the visit or for subsequent visits, allow the user to navigate between pages efficiently, store the user’s preferences, allowing the latter to interact with social networks and to use third-party services.
